Efficient numerical simulations of drug delivery in multi‐component brain tissue

In this contribution, we discuss the problem‐specific application of suitable model‐reduction techniques to obtain an efficient numerical simulation of therapeutic infusion processes within multi‐component brain tissues. Therefore, the required set up is reviewed to apply the method of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) in a combination with the discrete‐empirical‐interpolation method (DEIM) to a multi‐component brain‐tissue model based on the Theory of Porous Media (TPM). It appears that the required computation time for simulations can be reduced significantly. In this regard, an exemplary clinical issue (choice of the optimal infusion pressure) is discussed in terms of efficiency, accuracy, boundary‐value variations and clinical applicability.
